The Challenge:

To reset the Commercial Leisure industry

Gymbox was always going to be more than just another City-based gym. It was conceived as a true leisure facility. It would combine nightly resident DJs, neon lights, dancers, with state-of-the-art fitness environments that included Olympic size boxing rings, larger than life personal trainers and 42 showers. Plus, it was created 2 storeys below ground level. Gymbox needed ‘out of the box’ heating, ventilation and fire protection systems that could not just match but exceed expectation.

Gymbox began in a carpark in Holborn, the heart of London’s West End. The environment required a bespoke approach to heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems – because, as with many leisure facilities, all the ‘secret stuff’, from ducts to air con systems, is on show. It’s not hidden beneath the flooring or in the ceiling. The solution has to meet exacting ventilation and plumbing requirements of a high end, large scale leisure complex – in keeping with Gymbox’s minimalist, industrial-style environment.

The Solution

High end HVAC that can handle the pressure

Woodward tendered and won the contract to install Gymbox, Holborn. From the start, the in-house design team worked closely with Gymbox’s chosen designers and architects to achieve a high-spec Design and Build solution that was in keeping with the overall design.

This involved the complete installation of mechanical services and plumbing systems. The physical height restrictions, coupled with additional health and safety requirements of working below ground and landlords’ services provided a real challenge.

Woodward & Co. provided:

  • VRF Heating and cooling
  • Heat Recovery Ventilation
  • Smoke extract
